Birthday Boy

I can't believe it but Gregory turned 3. He is getting so big!Of course Gregory begged for a car cake and since we are celebrating his birthday twice - once with family and once with friends I made 2 cakes.I'll admit, I'm pretty proud of these cakes and they were really easy too.

Snow Day

We enjoyed the snow today. I'm so glad the kids got a good snow before we move to Texas.

Happy Birthday Stephanie!

Thomas' godmother Stephanie is celebrating her birthday today. He decided that since I'm not cool enough to take him to see her that I'd better post pictures with his thoughts:
"Why didn't anyone tell me about this ahead of time?"
"I love you godmama!""I'm trying to sing, really I am!""Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday Dear Stephanie, Happy Birthday to You!" "Hugs and Slobbery Kisses - Love Thomas!"
Maybe if Mommy gets her act together you'll get some real pictures.

Halloween Revisited

I never got around to posting these, but here are our pictures from Halloween and the All Saint's Party
Grandma's little elephant
A sad fairy.
A proud little Redskin

All ready for the All Saints Party - Gregory looks like he's in deep contemplation, Thomas is a happy little saint, and Clare looks a little smugNow Clare's got her eyeballs - any guesses on which saints they are?

Quick Takes - Going Fast

1)My kids are growing up way too fast! Clare has a loose tooth and is beginning to read. 2)Thomas is 5 months old now and grabbing everything in sight. He also took his first swing ride.

3)Thomas can roll over. He is beginning to scoot on the wood floor - backwards. (on his tummy, not on his back like the picture seems to portray, that would be impressive.)

4)Mommy and Thomas figured out how to use the babyhawk on my back.
5)Gregory's use of his vocab is really taking off. The boy composes sentences with many words - when we were used to one word desires.
For example: Mommy, we play football. I the redskins, you the eagles.

6)Gregory knows how to use the DVD and TV, so now whenever we're talking about putting on a movie for the kids, he's has done so before we get done discussing it.

Here he and his sister are pretending to be ballerinas.
7)John turns 30 in less than a month!

Freak Show

Today's Recess Attraction: The Amazing Dirt Eating 2 Year Old

It all started so innocently with Gregory playing in the dirt at Clare's school.

I'm not sure why but he decided to lick his palm of his hand. This raised several gasps and comments from 3-4 little girls.

The attention caused Gregory to do it again and again, and the clamour brought 4-5 more children to view the sight.

I noticed also and insisted that Gregory not lick his hands anymore and to stop playing in the dirt. I moved him to another spot where I thought we were safe.

The crowd followed. Gregory was loving the attention.

Somehow he dug in a crack and covered his face with dirt and ate quite a bit as well. At least that's what I heard from the now 20 or so students.

Nothing convinces a 2 year that he should do something as all those kids telling him "ewwww!", "gross!" and "how can you do that?!"

As a side note: The more attention Gregory got from the kids, the less Clare paid us.

Baby-zilla!

News Flash: Baby-zilla attacks family!

See that angry look in his eyes? This is one tough baby.

Deciding that toys weren't enough, Baby-zilla first attacked his mother and slobbered all over her cheeks with wet kisses.

Turning, the creature noticed Clare who's hair was just too tempting. Grabbing 2 handfuls, he moved in for the kill.

Clare decided that she had had enough. Baby-zilla turned to Gregory. We thought Gregory was doomed but at the last moment he was saved.

Baby-zilla was distracted by his thumb.

It's back to chewing toys for this little monster. ;)

Slip of the tongue

Me to Thomas in the van: Don't worry Thomas, it's just a short trip. When we get home, I'll eat you.

Feed...not Eat.

Best Laid Plans

"Columbus day - no school! What should we do?" - That thought went through my head last night. I didn't want to spend tons of money, nor did I want to end up sitting around the house.

Here's what I planned:
Mass, Nature Walk at Walney Pond, Ice Cream (Free Cold Stone from a program the kids did this summer) and then Buy and Make a Halloween Craft.

Here's how it played out:
Mass.

Nature Walk - Clare decides that "walks can become adventures" and decides to take the path less traveled through the creek. It's 50 degrees and our adventurer gets cold and the walk lasts 5 minutes. It was cold and she was soaked. There is a disagreement between mom and Clare over where exactly she should strip off her clothes, she thought the side of the road was appropriate so not to get water in the van...silly sweet girl.

Home - Change clothes and head to craft store.

Found and bought Halloween craft and some great Crayola buy one get one free stuff.

Ice Cream - Closed until 30 minutes after we got there. Made detour to Barnes and Noble - Gregory played with trains, Clare and I read, and then Clare got on the stage in the kid's section to tell a story

Story teller Clare in a loud voice: "Once upon a time there was a girl named Clare and a boy named Gregory. They left their house without permission and went into the woods, where they met a witch who ate them up. The End." (She got this story from John).

The ice cream shop is now open, so I keep Clare from relating any more morality tales. We get our treats, eat, and head home.

It's now naptime but Gregory wants to do the craft we bought. We pull it all out and discover...the pieces need to be glued. I thought they were self adhesive.

We're still working on the craft since glue doesn't seem to hold the foam pieces together. Maybe this will be done by Halloween.

Gregory falls asleep clutching the foam bones from the craft.

After naptime the day follows like normal - play, dinner, bath, bed. It didn't go as planned, but it was priceless.

Poor Excuse

The other day I was looking for a business card. A nice mom at our parish had given it to me so our sons could get together and have a play date.

I knew I had put it on the table but now I couldn't find it. I glanced around.

Gregory wanders past chewing on something. "Gregory what's that?"

He shows me a small slip of paper -(Gregory's a bit like a paper wasp, he loves to get a chunk and just chew until it's mush and then drop it in my hand. The grossest is when he decides to eat tissues). It's the last 1/8 of the business card, where Mary Kay is stamped in black.

Gregory ate it, there was nothing left to salvage. When I got the wad from his mouth, the boy explicitly pointed to his stomach and said "More in there."

What can I tell the other mom when I see her next?

Do you think she'll buy "Well, I would have called, except my son ate the card." It sounds like I don't want to get together. It's about as lame as 'my dog ate my homework.'

Apple & Pumpkin Picking

Fun and apples were had by all! Joe's getting in lots of practice with 2 little ones!
Clare cut and carried the pumpkin herself (at least to the wagon)
Our littlest pumpkin
I found one I can reach
Clare loves apple picking!

No Purple!

Boys are blue and girls are pink, no purple! At least that's what Clare wanted when she set up that pillow barrier. Thomas kept trying to suck on her arm.

It appears that we are feeling better. Clare and Thomas have stopped vomitting and Gregory stil hasn't gotten it. (I guess he still might, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.)

Clare will stay home from school for one more day just to be certain.

Big Little Guy

Can you see what Thomas' outfit says? It says 'Baby's First Valentine.'

This is what happens when you grow more quickly than Mom planned for.

The bodysuit is 6-9 months, the boy is only 4 months. Technically the planning was right, but who knew Thomas would grow so fast.

4 Months

And we're still best friends.

Poor Clare

With school comes bug season! She's not feeling so well, and she fell asleep with her bowl in the most convenient place.

Hope she feels better soon and no one else gets it. (Even though I know Gregory shared something with her this morning and I shared several things with Gregory later...sigh)

Going Her Way

Clare has a little boy she likes at school. Today his mother approached me.

K's Mom: K came home yesterday and told me that he's marrying Clare.
Me: Sounds like Clare, she says she's going to marry K
K's Mom: I asked him why he was marrying Clare and he said "Clare told me to".

Clare and K have to say goodbye everyday after school and often exchange little gifts. We have about 4 paper hearts K has made Clare. K's Mom has 20 or so at her house.

Talents - What's Yours?

Clare loves the Tinkerbell fairy books. In case you don't follow Disney fairy tales, each fairy has a special set of talents - such as water, light, cooking, gardening, etc. This led to the following conversation:

Clare: Mommy, how do the fairies pick their talents?
Me: They don't, Clare. The fairies are born with them, just like people. Everyone has different talents they are born with.
Clare: What's yours?
Me: (Stumped for the moment and distracted by trying to get Gregory to eat his dinner) I don't really know.
Clare: Maybe it's loving Jesus
Me: I sure hope so.
Clare: I really hope loving Jesus is my talent when I grow up.

Me too, kid, me too.

Gregory's adenoids

Gregory got to see the inside of his nose on TV yesterday.

Gregory's a mouth breather. I never thought much of this, until his dentist pointed it out. Since it is causing his teeth to move we went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist.

One common underlying cause for mouth breathing is enlarged adenoids. To check them the doctor takes a little camera in what looks like a long black piece of spaghetti and sticks it up the child's nose. (I am so amazed that the doctor could take a look and tell me what's wrong in 5 minutes or less)

It turns out that Gregory's adenoids cover 80-90% of his nasal passages. Poor kid - he can't really breath through his nose. So he will have to have them out.

It should clear up a whole list of things we've struggled with it, so it's a good thing. And he gets to tell everyone his nose is on TV.

Low Brain Power

My poor neglected blog, I just don't seem to have the energy or brain power at the current time to keep up with it.

At some point I will return to daily readings in Caritas in Veritate and more frequent posts.

Everything is going pretty well for us at moment, we are settling into the schedule of school and we're even blessed to have John home for the week. The kids are happy and I feel pretty content. It's just that the end of each day I just want to settle onto my bed and read a book when the baby goes to sleep. Each morning seems to come very quickly.

To keep up to date I'm thinking about trying to post a picture every day for a month. We're not doing much that is extraordinary, but it would give family a glimpse into what the kids do each day. Hopefully having something to post but not needing to type will inspire me, or help me to remember the funny things the kids say/do each day.

Guess Who's Hungry?

Clare Sense and Parole

Tonight Clare and I were doing simple addition problems on the side from her regular school work.

Looking at a problem that gave the options of 8 and 5 for the equation 6 + 2, she very calmly states "it can't be 5 that doesn't make sense. It's smaller than 6."

She is enjoying school, however Gregory misses her very much.

Once a week we go to do recess duty. I watch one corner of the playground and make sure there no escapees in my zone. Generally no children come within 10 yards of me, so it's not a worry.

Clare's class is the exception. Today I had a small herd of kindergarden girls milling around me. Luckily the school doesn't mind if Gregory plays with Clare and her friends. If they did, we wouldn't be able to volunteer.

The moment Clare appears it's as if she's been lost for years. Gregory runs to her and she runs to him. He plays with the girls for the full 20 minutes. At the whistle signalling the end of recess he follows Clare over to her lunch line. He then proceeds to lament her leaving as a greek woman might lament the death of her husband - prostrate on the ground, sobbing his heart out.

I'm not sure who's on parole here, Clare from class or Gregory from the day without Clare.

The Best Toy to Have

The kids were just talking about toys they want. Since I hear these desires often I pretty much tuned out the conversation.

I'll admit I don't know how Clare started, but this is when I tuned back in

Clare:...Thomas....A big toy, I mean really huge, that you can play with and pull on, throw up on, laugh at, and really really like.

I thought to myself - how sweet of her to be coming up with toys Thomas might like, I wonder what toy she's thinking about. Here I'm imagining toys with ribbons, bells and strings, soft and crinkly everything a little baby might like to get his fingers into.

Clare: Thomas, you're so lucky, you've got the best toy: Mommy! The milk bomb!

Quick Takes Snap Shot Edition

Here' what's been keeping us so busy (or at least some of it)

1) Clare started school and loves it!2) Brothers! While Clare's away the boys get all my attention. It's amazing how quiet the house is without Clare. 3)Corrina and Gregory playing under the table. Can you guess Gregory's favorite football team?4)Labor Day Weekend with the grandparents.
5)Clare, Gregory and friends all having a tea party.
6)Thomas loving some time with Daddy7) Thomas is 3 months and a chunk. It's so cute, right down to the fat dimples on the his elbows.

Time flies when you're having fun and you have 3 kids.

Caritas in Veritate #30

"Charity does not exclude knowledge, but rather requires, promotes, and animates it from within. Knowledge is never purely the work of the intellect. It can certainly be reduced to calculation and experiment, but if it aspires to be wisdom capable of directing man in the light of his first beginnings and his final ends, it must be “seasoned” with the “salt” of charity. Deeds without knowledge are blind, and knowledge without love is sterile."

Take me as I am

Between Mommy and Gregory

Mommy: You look so cute, I just love you in this outfit.

Gregory smiles.

Mommy: I pretty much love you in any outfit.

Gregory: Naked!

Mommy: Yes I love you when you're naked too.

Caritas in Veritate #29 A, B, & C

A)"Yet it should be added that, as well as religious fanaticism that in some contexts impedes the exercise of the right to religious freedom, so too the deliberate promotion of religious indifference or practical atheism on the part of many countries obstructs the requirements for the development of peoples, depriving them of spiritual and human resources."

B)"Man is not a lost atom in a random universe: he is God's creature, whom God chose to endow with an immortal soul and whom he has always loved."

C)"When the State promotes, teaches, or actually imposes forms of practical atheism, it deprives its citizens of the moral and spiritual strength that is indispensable for attaining integral human development and it impedes them from moving forward with renewed dynamism as they strive to offer a more generous human response to divine love."

I loved this paragraph in the encyclical. I had several more quotes, but then it would just be easier to put up the whole thing. The founding fathers of our country definitely hit on a good thing with freedom of religion. What a blessing we have to live where we do.

Saturday, August 15

Caritas in Veritate #28

"Openness to life is at the centre of true development. When a society moves towards the denial or suppression of life, it ends up no longer finding the necessary motivation and energy to strive for man's true good."

Kill the Dragon!

Clare's birthday party was today and we had so much fun with our good friends who came over.

The best part was definitely the pinata, which wouldn't be broken. It took all the kids until they were tired of hitting it and all the dads, (who when a hole appeared in the stomach decided to pour the candy out for the kids). What a mighty dragon!
Anthony getting swinging lessons
Gregory who loved beating something.

Rosie hitting the face

Miss Jane taking a shot

A shot of the dragon

Clare lining up and beating the heck out of the poor dragon

"Rescue me my knight in shining armor!"

Caritas in Veritate #27

"Feed the hungry (cf. Mt 25: 35, 37, 42) is an ethical imperative for the universal Church, as she responds to the teachings of her Founder, the Lord Jesus, concerning solidarity and the sharing of goods."

"What is missing, in other words, is a network of economic institutions capable of guaranteeing regular access to sufficient food and water for nutritional needs, and also capable of addressing the primary needs and necessities ensuing from genuine food crises, whether due to natural causes or political irresponsibility, nationally and internationally."

Gregory misses someone

This past Sunday we took John to the airport to catch his flight. It was pretty late and we figured the kids would all be asleep.

Gregory was still awake, however, when John hopped out of the van.

"Where'd Daddy go?" he asked. Evidently parents don't just leap out of his car on a regular basis without getting back in.

He's asked me that about 10 times since Sunday night.

I always answer the same way: "Daddy had to catch a plane to Boston for work. He'll be home Friday."

Today he responded to my response.
"Come home now, Daddy."

Clare and the Fashion Police

I took Clare and her new school uniform to the seamstress today.

She is so tiny that she needs a size 4 jumper (or smaller), but lengthwise the dress already falls at the top of her knees. I figured they would let it out.

I had Clare put on the dress and show it to the nice ladies who's English isn't the best.

One of the ladies asks me how much I want to change it. I figure about 2 inches or as much as the fabric allows.

After a few minutes of discussion in their language one of the women turns to us and says:
"Wait you want us to make it longer? It's already too big for her, if we make it longer it will look like she's wearing somebody else's clothes."

At least they're honest and didn't just take the job to make money. I wonder what the school will think about Clare's knees.

Here's looking at you kid
