Love with depth!

Just a few thoughts from the Bible study this week. Beth's point was about traveling with other people on our pilgrimage - and how none of the ancient Israelite pilgrims would ever travel alone.

How many of us travel alone (or semi-alone) on our pilgrimage to the Lord?

She pointed out that our culture is saturated with a superficial love - superficial friendship. We will have 300 contacts on Facebook, people we IM and text message, but no deep friendships. We are so self-reliant.

"I am fine." We tell just about everyone. No worries, I don't really need any help, I can manage it all by myself. For some reason our culture sees this as a great thing - not to depend on anyone except for maybe a few people.

She pointed out that when we get together with old friends we say things such as "This is great, it's like we've never been apart." And that's because we haven't made any new friends in the gap, because our lives are so busy, complicated, the people around me aren't really the type of people I want to be vulnerable with, etc.

And her most interesting point to me was that we can't just wait for perfect soulmates to come along for friendship- nobody's normal when you get to know them, and if you have a chance to have a deep friendship with someone you should take it and get over the little quirks that keep you from developing a support that will help you on the journey.

Now, Beth Moore isn't discounting family supports and the close friends we've had forever, but she is urging us if we are struggling with loneliness that maybe the people God has put around us are there for a reason.

Friendship means a lowering of defenses and can be quite scary with people you don't know very well. But we must love deeply. It is how we are called to be Christian in the world, and how we get the support we need to continue the journey we make through life.

I see this both for ourselves and in reaching out to others who need our encouragement too.

For
The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Pt 4: 7-8

And
And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. Hb 10: 24-25

Sleeping Position

Sometimes before Gregory goes to bed, he likes to snuggle in the covers on mama and daddy's bed. It's very cute to see him pull the blankets up to his neck and lay there and giggle at little things.

The other night this "conversation" transpired when John walked into the bedroom and saw Gregory on our bed.

Daddy: Gregory, you look like you're all set for bed in that bed.

Gregory: Da! (Which means yes!)

Daddy: You've got lots of space, where will Mama sleep?

Gregory: Da (Which means there) - and pats the bed next to him.

Daddy: But if you sleep in Mama's spot, and Mama sleeps in Daddy's spot, where will Daddy sleep?

Gregory: Da! And points to the pack n play. Then he giggles.

We got to go to the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science today, and had a great time.

This last picture is my favorite.

Mixed Up

This is on my floor And this is in my cabinet

Hosanna

On Tuesday, at Bible Study - Beth Moore (on the dvd) discussed the Feast of Shelters/Booths/Tabernacles. Now I don't really want to go deeply into the feast. But I was really struck by what I learned about the Catholic liturgy through the study. (I don't know if Beth Moore even knows that this is part of the Catholic liturgy.)

At the feast, in the Temple this was chanted:

O LORD, do save, we beseech You;
O LORD, we beseech You, do send prosperity!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD; We have blessed you from the house of the LORD. Ps 118: 25-26

And this was a joyful calling on the Lord to send the Messiah - now! According to Beth Moore, it was basically singing at the climax of the feast - Messiah now!!!

And this feast was so joyful that it was a saying among the Jews that if you had not witnessed it, and their celebration you could not know what joy meant(see here for more background and sources).

Then you fast forward to the time of Jesus - when he comes riding into Jerusalem and

The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
"Hosanna to the Son of David;
BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
Hosanna in the highest!" Mt 21:9

The people were calling out to Jesus - Messiah now! We believe you are the Messiah!
They all knew what the words meant and had been to that feast every year in the Temple.

And now every Mass we say those exact same words in our liturgy when we say the Hosanna.
And God is so good to us - we say those words and He truly comes to save us. His Body and Blood become present upon the altar and we receive Him.

All of these facts together make my eyes tear up and make me want to cry - how good God is to us, and how joyful those words are.

One Week And Then Some

It is so hard for me to believe that we only have one more week in Dallas.

It seems like the summer has just flown by, and now it is time to head back to Charlottesville and move in to our new townhouse. And in about a year it will be time for another move.

John and I are looking forward to our trip back, seeing friends we haven't seen for a while, and settling into a place for more than 12 weeks.

For the most part the kids have been troopers and most of the transitions have been very smooth, but it is wearing a little thin for me. If I had my way, we would just stay here - simply because I don't want to deal with one more move.

Hopefully it will not be long until we're settled in our new place, and life returns to a normal schedule.

Born Again

What I heard

Clare: I will never be born again, because I've already been born.

Mama: Yes that's right, you can only be born once.

Clare: No, mama, I've been born twice...pause.

Mama wonders how Clare knows about this and thinks - what a smart and holy child I have if she already knows and perceives that baptism is a second birth. I wonder who I should thank for this.

Clare: Once on a pot and once on the stove when I touched it.

Mama: Oh - burned not born.

A smile for the day

Chuck E Cheese Revisited

We got 20 free tokens from Chuck E Cheese via e-mail for Clare's birthday, and today we decided to go and do that instead of being outside. It's hot now in Dallas, and I'll even admit that it is hotter than VA and feels like it. This is the first time Gregory has ridden something by himself where he didn't beg to get off after the first 5 seconds.
C'mon Clare - this is supposed to be fun. I guess Clare isn't a naturally smiley child.
Oh, there's a smile - hidden by the carousel pole.

Old Fishing Photos

When we were in GA visiting my grandparents, one of the things that Clare asked to do is go fishing. Not being the type of person to want and go and sit and fish for hours (maybe if the kids were older) - we went to a trout farm, where it didn't take long to catch quite a few fish. Here is Grandma showing Clare how to cast
Clare can't believe we're actually going to eat that thing swimming around in there
Mama wants to fish, but all Gregory wants to do is reel in.
Stir the fish up with this stick.

We caught another one! Grandma is great at catching fish. I'm missing her today and wishing she was nearby.

Fruit Pizza or Tart

I made this lovely fruit tart for the Bible study today. It was great and it just looks so bright and pretty.

The link for the recipe is here. The recipe calls it a fruit pizza, but I feel like that does injustice to the actual product.

And I've discovered that an electric mixer is not a luxury. Next time we take an extended trip it is going with us. I've wished I brought it so many times this trip. And after beating the cream cheese icing for over 40 minutes by hand, I will never take it for granted again.

Classic Beauty

http://www.wnbc.com/slideshow/news/14307344/detail.html

The link above is for a slide show of classic American beauties and how they aged. I found it really interesting to see actresses like Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Claudette Colbert in their peak of beauty (absolutely stunning) and then when they were 80 or so. They were still beautiful just in a different way.

I loved how the slide show would say younger beauty and then older beauty, showing that the value in these women had not passed with the smooth skin and silken hair of their youth.

It also reminded me that beauty is fleeting no matter how much of it you have. And not to hold on to it, for it too will pass away.

Puppy Party

We went to a puppy birthday party for our little friend J.R. It was so cute, and his mama April put a lot of work into all of the little touches for the party. Needless to say, we had fun!
Each child (and adult if you so wished) got a pair of puppy ears to wear. I couldn't believe April made them all by hand. Clare picked out the poodle ears and wore them the rest of the day - not just at the party.
Gregory tolerated the ears and let me put them back on his head at least 20 times.
Clare and Anna Kate - J.R.'s big sister.
How blessed we are to have friends in Dallas.

Olympic Cost

I was reading this article about the cost of the Olympics in Beijing this summer - a mind staggering $43 Billion.

The country of China seems to want to appear perfect, changing as many habits of their inhabitants as possible so they may act like folks from Western Europe and America.

With groups like the "Capital Committee to Promote Culture and Ideological Progress", the city has done many things so not to offend - and my guess would be to make China look like a great place to live, no different from us.

But the cost must be so different for the average Chinese citizen. Dog has been taken off the menus, factories hundreds of miles away have been closed so there will be no pollution, cars will only be able to be driven every other day (based on licence plate), and over 1.5 million people have been moved (some of their houses demolished, against their will) to make way for this small event.

1.5 Million! I bet that's about the current population of the city of Dallas, or at least a really good chunk.

I think of all the human rights violations that China commits, and I cannot imagine the suffering that these games must bring to some of their people. And that will be swept under the rug
so the world can see a glorious event.

For some reason this really upsets me - to the point that I want to post about it. It just seems like a skin deep change, that will end with the end of the Olympics and nothing will get better in China. I'm not even sure the things they are doing would be the right steps to make things better in the long run. Instead of image, the country should be looking at what they can be doing for the well being of their citizens.

Clare on Dogs

Mama: What do you want to talk about tonight, Clare?

Clare: Puppies, I love puppies!

Daddy: If you were a puppy, what would you be?

Clare: A poodle with a short brain

Mama: A short brain - do you mean a small brain?

Clare: Yes

Mama:Where did you get that phrase?

Clare: I thought it up in quiet time.

Daddy: Do you want a dog

Clare: Yes, but I'm not going to get one until I grow up. Otherwise my parents will do all of the work, and I will pat the puppy.

Mama: What's the hardest part about puppies?

Clare: Feeding them.

Mama: What would you do with a puppy?

Clare: Pet it, rub it's tummy, throw things for it, anything I could do for it, take it to the vet if it's bruised or has a broken bone.

Mama: And what would you name the puppy?

Clare: Soggy... no Layla!

The quirks of life

Carole sent this meme to me and I'd do just about anything Carole asked me to - she's that special and amazing. If you'd never done it before - you should stop by her blog - she's got stories about ministry, Ireland, the Midwest, and all sorts of Catholic resources and links that keep me informed and generally excited about the Church in the world today.

Rules of the Quirky Meme
1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Mention the rules on your blog.
3. Tell about six unspectacular quirks of yours.
4. Tag six fellow bloggers by linking them.
5. Leave a comment on each of the six blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged

Some of my quirks:

1. I will do just about anything for John to take the kids first thing in the morning. Even if I go to bed first, sleep longer, or have nothing to do. I always want at least 10 more minutes to myself.

2. If I am cleaning my house and I can find a cardboard box or paper bag, what I am picking up usually goes in the said box or bag, until I feel like I am ready to go through it, which could be 5 minutes or 5 weeks.

3. When matching socks I always stuff John's, Clare's, and Gregory's socks one inside another. Mine must be folded over each other, not stuffed.

4. I always seem to want to talk to John the most - when he wants to go to sleep. (which is a real problem for him, based on #1.)

5. When using a spoon, I have to make sure it is licked completely clean, before I redip it in whatever I'm eating.

6. I like to fall asleep with a rosary in my hands to make sure that if I wake up and can't sleep, I already have it and don't have to scrounge around the bed to find it.

I've sent out a meme like this before so I don't want to double duty anyone, but if these folks are interested, I tag

Majella Mom and/or Il Postino over at Waiting for Charlie
Stephanie at Watcher of the Morn'
April at Join the Mureens
Amy at Little Men, Big Hearts

And that's it for now, unless anyone else wants to join in. It's late, and John's asleep, and as you know about #1, I should be off to bed too. I'll try and remember to leave notes tomorrow.

Gregory and the Camera

Here is an upset Gregory. I think it's because I won't give him my new camera. Here he is again - playing with my old camera - the one I thought was broken.
No says Gregory - you just didn't let me tinker with it. I love this thing and tomorrow you'll post the pictures I got it to take. By the way, did I mention I do my best work without a shirt?

Clare on Identifying Daddy

Unfortunately, since John is sick and our day's schedule has been quite off there is no interview.

There is however an interesting conversation between Clare and her friend, while we were on our way to pick John up at the DART (Dallas' version of the Metro).

Friend: How will I be able to recognize Clare's daddy?

Me: Well he's a bit taller than I am, he has glasses, and his hair is turning grey.

Clare: Oh, and he has really hairy skin.

Friend: Actually, I think all men have really hairy skin.

Man Cold

John's sick today. He came home at noon and it's thrown everything off.

I can't help but be reminded of this clip which I believe I first saw over at Muddy Bathwater.

Pizza Anyone?

Old pictures from our trip to the National Zoo in May. I'm slowing going to be adding pictures from the things we've done this summer.

Clare on Sports

Daddy: What's your favorite sport?

Clare: Football

Daddy: Who's your favorite team?

Clare: The Cowboys

Daddy: If you could play a sport what would you play?

Clare: Soccer

Daddy: Do you know any athletes?

Clare: Uncle Stephen plays soccer and Uncle Matt does too.

Mama: What would you do if you suddenly found yourself in the middle of a football field?

Clare: Call for mom and dad, and they wouldn't find me because they wouldn't know where I was, even though they looked and looked all over the house.

Daddy: Do you think there is too much of a focus on competition in children's sports?

Clare: Yes, if they win they get trophies.

Daddy: Do you feel pressure as a future young athlete?

Clare: When I'm running and kicking I'm always pretending to play soccer. Yes. I wonder what I will do after sports and if I don't win I will scream.

1930's family

Majella Mom always finds the neatest quizes, and I find myself doing them.

As a 1930s wife, I am

As a 1930s husband, I am
Very Superior

Take the test!

I took the test for John, and evidently my opinion of my husband is extremely 1930's. We'll see if he scores the same.

HT: Majella Mom

For some reason I can't get the links to work above. So you'll have to visit Majella Mom's blog to get the link.

Political Affiliation

Can you guess which party we belong to?

(By the way, these were the only shoes in his size at Target)

Clare on Literature

Daddy: Clare have you always liked stories?

Clare: Yes!

Daddy: What's your favorite story?

Clare: Cinderella

Mama: Why is Cinderella your favorite?

Clare: It has a happy ending, and I like the cat and the mice friends

Mama: In your opinion who is a better writer, Beatrix Potter or Dr. Seuss?

Clare: Dr. Seuss! He has written Horton hears a Who and The Grinch who Stole Christmas. They are good stories with bad in them. In Grinch, he steals the toys and waits to hear them crying, but they are not, in the end he carves the roast beast.

Mama: What are some book you'd recommend for Gregory?

Clare: Thomas the Tank Engine books/Train books

Mama: How about for other girls?

Clare: Tons of books - Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid

4 year old Interviews

In honor of Clare's birthday and her new found 4 year old wisdom, we have decided to interview her on different topics each day this week. She can bestow her wisdom on the world at large.

Here is just a teaser:

Daddy: What is your position on cap and trade?
Clare: (pauses for a minute, thinks and responds) Some bad parts I don't like, and some good parts I do like. I do like cupcakes and I don't like peas.

Clare had no idea what she is talking about, but she has the makings of a fine politican.

Clare's Birthday Party

Yesterday was Clare's 4th birthday!

She is such a big, amazing little girl!

Here are some pictures from the birthday party we had at a wonderful pottery painting store. Clare was a complete angel and enjoyed the whole thing. And Gregory - well all he broke was a paint brush which was a relief.

Clare blowing out the candles on her lady bug cupcakes.
A shot of our massive table for the kids to work at - they all loved it - it was actually the perfect environment for a 4 year old girl's party.
Clare painting her box - working lovingly with pink and only pink at this point.
Clare's masterpiece to be fired and glazed. Some purple got added to the mix.
A close up of the lady bug cupcakes that Clare requested. They were easy to make and disappeared quickly.

Posts Coming

I promise some posts are coming...I'm not sure what has happened to my posting.

My camera broke, and I guess we've been busy...but not that busy.
